MANSFIELD, OH- The Shirley A. Foundation brought together members of the Mansfield community Friday night for the inaugural South Side Hoop Fest at John Todd Park, kicking off the festivities with a block party and basketball competitions.

The 3-point shootout would be dominated by the youngest player in the field, as 9-year-old Rashad Reed drained 5 of his 8 shots in the championship round to claim the title after posting the most makes in the opening round as well. The soon to be 4th-grader said, "I was feeling it", during the competition.

In the slam dunk contest, local hip-hop artist 6ix The Mastermind, also known as Madison graduate Delvonta Cheathem, brought home the hardware to achieve a life-long goal. "One thing that I always wanted in my life is to win a slam dunk championship," Cheathem says, "and to bring it to reality it's like a dream."

Event Director and founder of the Shirley A Foundation Cleve Gordon says he brought the festivities to John Todd Park to help facilitate a need in the community. "The South Side Hoop Fest came along when the kids were out here and they had nowhere to play really because the backboards and all that stuff was messed up," Gordon says, "so me and my family we say, "well, let's do something for them."

Most of the proceeds from the basketball tournament will go towards funding new tempered glass backboards and rims at the park. Gordo says slots are still available in both the youth and adult tournaments at the cost of $100 per squad if there are players still interested in joining. Gordon says sign up will begin at 9 am at John Todd Park.
